About The Riverhouse

The Riverhouse is situated on 100+ acres of land in Madoc Township, Hastings County, about 45 minutes north of Belleville, Ontario.

This property is part of our family’s intergenerational collaborative effort to protect land, conserve wild habitat, and honour our relationships with the natural world as integral to our wellbeing. Our creativity, healing, and ability to thrive is inseparable from nature. We are the grateful students and stewards of over 300 acres of forest and farmland that is part of a growing community of people in the Hamlet of Cooper who are taking action to protect wilderness, regenerate farmland, and learn how to be good stewards for future generations.

We are pleased to make the Riverhouse available for others to benefit from being immersed in the natural world, by offering it for rent April through October.

With walking trails that wind through mixed forest, almost 1 km of river front, and thousands of acres of unceded wilderness that borders us, The Riverhouse offers up an immersion experience in the wild beauty of our corner of southeastern Ontario.

The rocky Canadian shield forest gives way to the Black River, which is a part of the Great Lakes Basin. The Black River is a tributary of the Moira River that flows to the Bay of Quinte on Lake Ontario.

Bear, elk, moose, deer, wolves, foxes, and coyotes have all been spotted, as well as eagles, hawks, grouse, turkeys, and many species of songbirds. The river is alive with bass, whitefish, frogs, painted turtles, and the odd timid water or emerald snake, and in the Spring and Summer, dragonflies swoop and glide over the sunny rocks.

The Riverhouse draws outdoor activity lovers in search of hiking, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, skiing, and snowshoeing, as well as families seeking a summer getaway, and artists, writers, musicians, and photographers, seeking a creative retreat. It's a meditative oasis, and a wild kingdom of learning, ready to welcome all those who hunger for deeper nature connection.
